Settlement on the land that eventually became West Richland began in the late 1870s. The first schoolhouse was built in 1896, well before the creation of Benton County in 1905. Around this time and up past World War II, the West Richland area was known as Lower Yakima. West Richland was officially incorporated in 1955, combining the two relatively young towns of Heminger City and Enterprise. In 2008, West Richland hosted the speed test for the fastest production car in the world, topping 250 mph.
